Soap making

1. Principle

The ats and sodium hydroxide are co-boiled and hydrolyzed into advanced sodium fatty acid sodium and glycerin, the former is processed as soap.

2. Supplies

150 and 300 mL beaker each one, glass rod, alcohol lamp, asbestos net, tripod, lard (or other animal fat or oil), NaOH, 95% alcohol, saturated salt water.

3. Operation

(1) In a 150 mL beaker, fill with 6g of lard and 5 mL of 95% alcohol, then add 10 mL of a 40% NaOH solution. Stir with glass rod to dissolve (if necessary, heat).

(2) Place the beaker on an asbestos net (or water bath), heat it over low heat, and stir with glass. During the heating process, if the alcohol and water are evaporated in the Evaporator, it should be replenished at any time to maintain the original volume. For this purpose, 20 mL of a mixture (1 1) of alcohol and water can be prepared in advance for addition.

(3) After heating for about 20min, the saponification reaction was almost complete. If the test is necessary, take out several drops of the sample with a glass rod and put them into the test tube, add 5 ~ 6 mL of distilled water to the test tube, and heat the oscillation. When standing, there is oil separation, indicating that saponification is not complete, can be added to continue saponification.

(4) Slowly add 20 mL of hot distilled water to the saponified fully viscous solution and stir to make them other. Then slowly pour the viscous solution into 150 mL of hot saturated table salt solution, and stir while adding. After standing, the soap will salt precipitation to float, to be all the soap precipitation, solidification can be taken out with a glass rod, the soap is made.

4. Explain

(1) The oil is not easy to dissolve in the alkali water. Alcohol is added to increase the solubility of the oil in the alkali liquor and accelerate the speed of the saponification reaction.

(2) If not a water bath, use a small heat.

(3) During the saponification reaction, keep the original volume of the mixture, and do not let the mixture boil dry or splash to the outside of the beaker. Note: Saponification reaction: the hydrolysis reaction of the oil under alkaline conditions.
